Laura Dickey believes that piano lessons are beneficial for all; she strives to develop in her students a life-long love and appreciation of music as well as the knowledge and tools to make music. She has taught students ranging in age from age four through 84 and especially enjoys seeing the joy her adult students express upon returning to piano after many years.

Students in Laura’s studio participate in studio recitals and workshops and may perform in the National Guild Auditions, the MTAC Certificate of Merit evaluations, the Royal Conservatory Evaluations, the NFMC Festivals, and other recitals, festivals, and contests sponsored by various organizations.

Laura began piano lessons at the age of five and holds Bachelor’s degrees in Piano Pedagogy and Performance from Texas Woman’s University and a Master’s degree in History of Music from Yale University. She began teaching during college and has maintained a private piano studio in the Long Beach/Los Alamitos, California area since 1994. Her studio, Musette Academy for Music and the Arts, is located in Los Alamitos. Laura has also served as organist/pianist for several area churches and accompanies vocal and instrumental soloists.

A National Certified Teacher of Music through the Music Teachers’ National Association, Laura is a member of the Music Teachers’ Association of California (former President of Long Beach Branch), the California Association of Professional Music Teachers (former Treasurer of District 3), the National Guild of Piano Teachers (Chairman of Long Beach Center), the American Guild of Organists, the National Federation of Music Clubs, and the Tuesday Musicale of Pasadena performing organization.

Laura adjudicates for the National Guild of Piano Teachers auditions and the Music Teachers’ Association of California Certificate of Merit examinations as well as other festivals and contests sponsored by music teachers’ organizations.

Outside music, Laura earned a degree in Aerospace Engineering from The University of Texas at Austin and did graduate work at the University of Southern California. She worked in the spacecraft industry for twenty years and was a part-time lecturer in Engineering Technology at California State University, Long Beach.

Laura especially enjoys scuba diving and is certified as an Assistant Instructor in the sport. On land she enjoys oil painting, particularly of underwater scenes.
