A
native of Korea, pianist Youn-Hee Bang attended Yewon School of
Fine Arts, the most prestigious school for talented young
musicians in Korea. Graduating with a full scholarship with the
highest honor from Sungshin Women's University in Seoul, Korea,
she came to the United States and furthered her studies at
California State University, Fullerton to study with Eduardo
Delgado and received her Master's degree. Bang continued her
studies at Manhattan School of Music where she received a
Manhattan School of Music Scholarship as a student of Phillip
Kawin. In addition, She also studied with Alfons Kontarsky at
the International Summer Academy Mozarteum in Salzburg, Austria.
Currently, Bang is pursuing her Doctoral degree at the State
University of New York at Stony Brook, which offered her a
full-tuition scholarship to pursue her D.M.A.
Being the first to receive the Alicia de Larrocha Scholarship
from California State University, Fullerton, the legendary
pianist Mm. Alicia de Larrocha highly praised for Bang's
impressive combination of virtuosic technique and colorful
musicality, and wrote to Bang, "Youn-Hee, you will be a great
artist." Bang's many awards include high honors from the
Missouri Southern, and Virginia Waring International Piano
Competition and, the first prize and the best performance award
of Los Angeles International Liszt Competition, International
Peninsula Young Artist Music Festival Competition, Carmel Piano
Competition and the CPMTA (California Professional Music
Teachers Association) Sonata Competition. Bang was also the
two-time Grand Prize winner of 2000 and 2002 Music Associates
Performance Award Competition in Southern California.
Bang has been featured as soloist with several orchestras
including the International Chamber Ensemble of Rome, Incheon
Symphony, Royal Chamber Ensemble, Sungshin Women's University
Orchestra in Korea, as well as the California State University
Orchestra. Her solo and chamber appearances have presented her
at such venues as the Seoul Arts Center, Sejong Arts center in
Seoul, Korea, the Recital Hall of Mozarteum Music Academy in
Salzburg, Austria, City Hall in Andorra, Spain, McCallum Theatre
in Palm Spring, CA, Steinway Hall, Yamaha Hall, and the Staller
Center in New York.
Among her Korean teachers are Young-Joo Hong, Gahng-Soon Lee,
and Bo-Mee Ihm, and she has played in the masterclasses not only
in Korea but also in the United States, and been coached by
Alicia de Larrocha, Norma Fisher, Igor Kipnis, Louis Lortie,
Seimour Berstein, and Oxana Yablonskaya among others.
