Trudy Turpin's Biography:
I have been teaching piano for over 25 years in
Tacoma since earning my Bachelor of Music in 1986
from Pacific Lutheran University. I specialized in
piano performance and teaching, studying under Dr.
Calvin Knapp. I have been an active member of
Washington State Music Teachers Association since
1987, holding the offices of secretary, newsletter
editor, vice president, and president of the Tacoma
chapter. My students have benefited greatly from the
many opportunities this association provides,
including performance with chamber and full
orchestra, other recitals, evaluations, and
competitions. My students range in age from 4 to 84.
The culminating event of the year for my school-age
students is our spring recital in which they enjoy
sharing their pieces they have mastered and have the
chance to receive awards.
Besides teaching piano, I am also a church pianist/
music director, and I do accompanying for choirs and
soloists and perform for weddings or other special
events.
I strive to give my students a well-rounded
education in music. This includes music theory,
note-reading, history, technique, ear-training,
memorizing, and composing. I try to instill in my
students good practice habits, which lead to a sense
of accomplishment and self-confidence. I also
encourage creativity. The most important thing I
hope to teach my students is the love and enjoyment
of music for a lifetime.
