I studied at Cambridge, Durham and Exeter Universities, and
graduated with distinction from the Royal College of Music,
winning the Raymond Ffenell Prize.
I taught for some 25 years as a Head of Music in a Mixed
Comprehensive School, before taking early retirement.
I am now involved as a private piano teacher, teaching all
grades to diploma level, in both classical and jazz styles. I am
the Music Writer & Critic for The Herald Newspaper in Plymouth,
and have been an examiner for Trinity College, London, and a
moderator at GCSE Music. I am now very involved in composition,
and publish some of my music at
www.sibeliusmusic.com as well as in the UK, Switzerland and
China. I am also a consultant and syllabus setter for the
Electronic Organ with Trinity College, London.
I have given piano recitals in the UK and overseas, and now am
involved in occasional piano duo work.
I am a member of the European Piano Teachers' Association (EPTA
UK). My teaching philosophy is summed up by my slogan: 'An
amateur practices until he gets it right, a professional
practices until he can't get it wrong!' I feel that the learning
situation must be stimulating and totally professional at all
times, but not without essential humour. If a student, at
whatever level, knows nothing more after a lesson than he or she
did beforehand, then that lesson has failed. As a performer and
former examiner I realise the need to maintain my own playing
standards, and to test these at every opportunity, so that there
is a true empathy with students and what they have to
experience. It is so important to keep up with modern techniques
and, indeed, technology, as so much has changed so rapidly.
