Natalya
Shkoda is a gifted Ukrainian pianist, composer, musical critic
and musicologist, who started her piano lessons at the age of 6.
Mrs. Shkoda graduated with honor as a pianist and composer from
Kharkov Special Music School for Gifted Children in Ukraine in
1994, being awarded a gold medal. Her primary teachers at that
time were Bella Yukht (piano) and Ljudmila Shukajlo
(composition).
In 1999 Mrs. Shkoda graduated Summa Cum Laude both as
a musicologist and a pianist from Kharkov State Institute of
Arts in Ukraine, being awarded a Concert Performe! r
Certificate. Her piano teacher at that time was Dr. Sergei
Polusmiak. Her t heory advisor! was Dr. Taras Kravtsov (The
title of her final project is "The Evolution of the Piano
Passages in the Sonatas of the Classical Composers.")
Two years later she received her Master of Music Degree in Piano
Performance under well-known american pianist and piano
professor Walter Cosand from Arizona State University School of
Music, being a recipient of the Regent’s Scholarship.
At the present moment, Mrs. Shkoda is doing her Doctorate Degree
in Piano Performance at Arizona State University School of
Music, being awarded the K. Herberger Scholarship. She is
teaching a group piano class for non-piano music majors at ASU
as a part of her Graduate Teaching Assistantship since 2001 and
continuing working as an accompanist for the preparatory labs
and musical shows at ASU Lyric Opera Theater since 1999. Mrs.
Shkoda is an active member of the MTNA (Music Teachers National
Association) since 2000. !
In her artistic biography: regular piano, harpsichord and organ
solo recitals as well as chamber music and accompanying recitals
(often with her outstanding brother-violinist Fedir Shkoda) in
Ukraine, Russia, Belarus, Latvia, Lithuania, Czech Republic,
France and the USA. Mrs. Shkoda has recently appeared as a
soloist with the MasterWorks Festival Orchestra in Houghton, New
York, and Mesa Symphony, Arizona. She participated in several
Radio and TV Productions in Ukraine, various Master-classes
(recently under Janice Weber, Radoslav Kvapil, Hugh Sung, Philip
Kawin, Pavlina Dokovska, David Burge, Awadagin Pratt, and Janina
! Kudlik), Summer Music Schools, Festivals and Competitions.
Among her awards:
- Laureate of the Ukrainian
National Competitions for the Young Composers (1990 & 1993-
Kiev; 1996- Odessa);
- Author of about 20
publications in the Ukrainian Press and Winner of the Young
Journalist's Contests under nominations “Best Review” and
“Critic-Ace” (1998 &1999- Kharkov);
- Laureate of the Klatzkin
Competition for the Contemporary American Music (2000);
- Alternate Winner of the ASU
Concerto Competition (2001);
Winner of the MasterWorks Festival Concerto Competition in
Houghton, New York, both in 1997 and 2000.
