Philosophy
I believe it is important that students
have teacher(s) who know the Pianistic path,
and can point out musical nuances to make
their piano experience fulfilling,
fantastic, interesting, and absolutely
delightful. I teach to impart the Tradition
of the Art of Pianism. Those traditions
passed to me come from Bach's organ,
Mozart's harpsichord, Beethoven's pianos,
and Liszt's piano academy. My own
understanding of periods, pianists, and
composition has developed as well from a
lifetime spent studying the Great Masters of
Music.
Ethnomusicology aside, there should be joy
in upholding and preserving the Pianistic
art and the Mindset across all boundaries
racial, political, and otherwise. I had to
work hard to gain respect due to my
mixed-race status in and out of the piano
world, I still do. I hope to bring
compassion and understanding particularly to
talented students who hope to unite the
world through their successes.
Biography
At birth, Angela M. Kneale was gifted a
piano from her great-grandmother, Eva Kneale,
who was a Philadelphia socialite/ pre-madonna/
vocalist/music teacher from the 20's through
the 60's. Angela Kneale was born near her
great-grandmother's home in Bucks County, PA
of a Japanese national mother and an
American father. The overall attitude of the
Quakertown community persecuted Angela for
her mixed-race/national heritage regardless
of how much she tried to fit in and do well.
Her love of the piano and art overshadowed
any negativity and allowed her to excel at
the Piano.
Though young Angela began playing piano
independently by age 2, formal
lessons began for Angela at age 6 with
Gloriana Sewell. Angela gained
acknowledgement for her interpretive
artistry by Age 9 by the American College of
Musicians after review at her National
Audition for interpretation of contemporary
solo works. By age 10 Angela left Sewell's
studio and went to study with the Husband of
her church's organist. Angela's pedagogical
studies commenced, by age 12, under tutelage
of Organist, Dr. Richard VanAuken. Angela
easily performed many of the works found on
Martha Argerich's debut album by the time
she was 14. Angela refined her Bach
interpretation with Dr. VanAuken as well as
her Beethoven. Angelá's playing that was
heavily influenced by Sokoloff's
intervention in her lessons during these 5
years. Miss Kneale maintained a position of
placing in the top 3 performers for the
State of Pennsylvania, PMTA competitions for
5 consecutive years. Miss Kneale eventually
began her own personal departure from Dr.
VanAuken with her own independent studies of
the solo piano works of Debussy and Ravel.
At age 15 Angela Kneale started her own
private piano studio in order to afford her
lessons with her beloved mentor Dr. Kiszely.
Angela began study with the Former
Hungarian, a pianist from the Liszt Academy,
and world renowned music teacher who
restructured the Hungarian Music Education
system;- Dr. Andor Kiszely at his Mainline
Conservatory of Music by his invitation. She
quickly became one of his prizewinners
before her departure to College and brief
study with French pianist, Anne Petite (also
from Curtis) by age 17.
Angela attended Ithaca College School of
Music on scholarship and received her
Bachelor degree in Music. During that time
she made her own arrangements to privately
study with Harry Jensen in New Paltz, NY for
other pedagogical and performance techniques
and began pursuit of more actively
intellectual endeavors and political
organizing for issues.
Miss Kneale has held Keyboard and Piano
Artist Faculty positions at; Community
Conservatory of Music and Art in Doylestown,
PA; Doylestown School of Music and Art in
Doylestown, PA; CSMA Ithaca in Ithaca, NY.
Miss Kneale has allowed some of her students
to audition and take State and National
examinations. Miss Kneale has had students
perform for the State Talent Showcases (with
original composition) for NYSMTA (NY) & PMTA
(PA). Her students also play for
professional performances and auditions
nationally and internationally. She is a
currently a member of the AFM, MTNA, HTMA,
and is the founder and director of the
Mililani Music & Arts Academy.
