Im, gold
medalist of the 1997 San Antonio International Piano
competition, was born in Korea and began studying piano at age
four. At age six, she won the gold medal in the Korean National
Teacher’s Association competition and at age ten she was
awarded first prize in the Samik National Piano Competition.
That same year, she also won the gold medal in the National
Children’s Song Composition competition in Korea, after which
her composition was nationally broadcast. Ms. Im’s other
competition successes include taking first prize in both the
Dong-A Piano Competition in Korea and winning the Artist
International Audition in 1993 after playing only the
preliminary round.
Ms. Im received her B.A. in music from Seoul National
University in Korea and came to the United States. She received
her Master’s degree in music from the Juilliard School and
earned her Doctorate of Music and Art from SUNY, Stony Brook.
Her concert career includes performances with the George Enescu
Romanian Orchestra, the Sliven Philharmonic of Bulgaria, the Los
Angeles Youth Symphony, the Stony Brook Orchestra, the Korean
Broadcasting Symphony Orchestra, the Seoul National University
Orchestra and the Seoul City Orchestra. Ms. Im has also given
recitals at Carnegie Recital Hall, Lincoln Center - Avery Fisher
Hall, and Symphony Space in New York City and at the Kennedy
Center in Washington D. C. as well as in Los Angeles, Chicago,
Toronto, and Salzburg, Austria. She has toured extensively
throughout the Far East, including three concert tours and
numerous master classes.
Ms. Im gave numerous concerts both in the United States and
Korea premiering many piano works by her husband, Yoon-il Auh.
These include “Concertino for Violin, Piano, and Orchestra”,
which was premiered with Mr. Auh as violin soloist with the
Seoul Orchestra of New York at Symphony Space in 1992. Ms.
Im’s performance at the recent San Antonio International Piano
competition included “Summer Fantasy”, a piano suite by her
husband.
