Margaret Lai, a native of Hong
Kong, has performed in three continents and received her
extensive musical training from prestigious music conservatories
and universities with many great concert artists and
distinguished scholars of our century. Ms. Lai is recently named
as the Who's and Who's of American Women in the Millennium First
Edition in addition to her honor as the Outstanding College
Students of America Award in 1987.
Ms. Lai received her Bachelor of Music degree in Piano
Performance and Music Education from the Eastman School of Music
in Rochester, New York as a scholarship student under the
direction of Rebecca Penneys, Barry Snyder and James Avery in
1991. Her Master of Arts degree in Piano Performance with a
special scholarship to study with Ana Maria Trenchi de Bottazzi
was completed at Aaron Copland School of Music, Queens College
CUNY in New York in 1993. She did her postgraduate work at
various notable institutions as The Julliard School, Stanford
University and San Francisco Conservatory of Music. Ms. Lai was
the prizewinner at the Joanna Hodges International Competition
in 1987.
Throughout the years, Ms. Lai has continually heightened her
piano technique and artistry from many Master Teachers in all
nationalities such as Bela Siki, Joanna Hodges, Carl Schachter,
Carola Grindea, Boris Petrushansky, Jean Barr, Donna Brink Fox,
Elier Suarez, Rumiko Isasken, Mack McCray, Charles Barber, Alan
Cohen, David Dubal just to name a few out of fifty of them. In
numerous occasions, she was selected to perform in Master
Classes conducted by Fou Tsong, Jean-Paul Sevilla, Lev
Natocheney, New York Lyric Quartet, Frank Weinstock, etc. Ms.
Lai made her additional study at Johannesen International School
of the Arts in Victoria, B.C. Canada in 1989 and International
Music Camp for Young Musicians at Sermoneta, Italy in 1994.
During 1992-94, she had the privilege to be coached by the best
singer in Europe, the renowned Russian-Italian opera singer,
Mascia Predit in Delaware.
In 1999, Ms. Lai made her TV Broadcasting on 'Scarlatti and
Mozart' at the Access TV channel in Santa Clara county as the
Artist-in-Residence in the Community Museum, Milpitas, Northern
California. She made her radio broadcast at the Special
Broadcasting Service in Sydney, Australia in 1992 and
performances in Beijing Normal University and Inner Mongolia,
China in the subsequent year. In 1992 and 1993, Ms. Lai appeared
in the Pinault School of Music Concert at Carnegie Weill Recital
Hall, New York. She has also performed many benefit concerts in
the East and West Coast for organizations as Alzheimer Services
of the East Bay, Taiwan Earthquake Disaster Relief Fund, in
places such as Dean Lesher Regional Arts Center, Memorial Art
Gallery, Cokesbury Auditorium and Columbia University.
Ms. Lai holds high aesthetic values in performing arts and has
been organized numerous concerts and chaired music festivals.
Among them are: Founder, Young Virtuosos of Delaware Concert
Series; Co-founder, Friday Morning Musicale, DE; Yamaha
Clavinova Festival, CA; Young Virtuosos Concert, Milpitas, CA;
Chairman, Delaware State Senior Piano Festival; Vice-President,
Delaware State Music Teachers Association. She has been an
adjudicator for the Concerto Competition, California Association
of Professional Music Teachers.
Since 1981, Ms. Lai has been on faculty in music schools and
conservatory here in the States and overseas. Some of the
positions in the States are Cazadero Performing Arts Camp, CA;
Community Music School, Walnut Creek, CA; Archdiocese of San
Francisco; Piano Plus. Yamaha Teaching Studio, CA; Wilmington
Music School, DE. Her overseas positions included Katherine Lu
Music Center, Hong Kong Arts Center; Archdiocese of Hong Kong;
Nanyang Academy of the Arts, Singapore. She is a very gifted
teacher whose students have received superior ratings in music
festivals and auditions. They have performed 10-15 pieces
program in National and International level at the National
Guild Piano Auditions.
Her professional affiliations included Faculty Member, National

Piano Teachers / American College of Musicians, Music Teachers
National Association, European Piano Teachers Association,
Leschetizsky Association, American Beethoven Society, and Chopin
Foundation, U.S.A.
Beginning in the fall of 2000, Ms. Lai is the Professor of Piano
at the Town House International School, THIS School of Music in
New York City. She is recently appointed as the Assisting
Artistic Director for THIS School of Music, which has a panel of
outstanding international faculty and
distinguished guest artists.
