 Pianist Libby Yu has established herself as one of Canada's leading young pianists. As well as winning First Prize at the 27th CBC Radio National Competition for Young Performers, she was a prizewinner in the Eckhardt-Gramatté Competition and she was awarded a Diploma of Honour at the 13th International Frédéric Chopin Piano Competition held in Warsaw, Poland.
As a concert pianist she has performed around the world in halls such as the Amsterdam Concertgebouw, Carnegie Recital Hall in New York, the Ambassador Auditorium in Pasadena, the National Philharmonic Hall in Warsaw, the Salle Wilfrid-Pelletier at Place des Arts in Montreal, and the Orpheum Theatre in Vancouver. She has also performed with numerous orchestras including the Netherlands Philharmonic, Montreal, Toronto, National Arts Centre, Saskatoon, Edmonton, Vancouver, CBC Vancouver, Manitoba Chamber and Victoria.
Ms. Yu's discography include the Holland Music Sessions World Tour 1995 compact disc and the Chopin International Competition compact disc. Her latest recording, "Brahms' Sonatas and Songs" with Nicolo Eugelmi and Mariateresa Magisano for Skylark Music has just been released.
Ms. Yu has received her Bachelor and Master of Music from the University of British Columbia where she studied with renowned pianist and teacher, Professor Lee Kum-Sing. She previously studied with Edward J. Parker and Phyllis Taylor.
Ms. Yu has been teaching privately at her Richmond studio for 10 years. Her students have achieved high honors in the Royal Conservatory of Music examinations and received awards in local music festivals. During her study in Boston, she taught Secondary Piano to college students at the New England Conservatory of Music. Ms. Yu has a special interest in developing the musical skills of her students, in training and equipping them with tools to serve in the church ministry, and also in encouraging them to share their talents with others. She holds two student recitals a year.
