About the Teacher

Education and Experience:
1999 - Present:
I teach a small group of 15 students in my home and at Merrimon Christian School in Asheville, NC. (Hoping to expand to between 40 and 50 students over the next several months.) I am currently the music teacher for the same school for grades K through 12.

1997- 1999
Pianist for Woodland Hills Baptist Church, Asheville, NC

1996 - 1997
Minister of Music at Hominy Baptist Church, Candler, NC

1992 - 1996
University of North Carolina at Greensboro, BS in Human Development and Family Studies

1992 - 1993
Pianist for Florida Street Baptist Church, Greensboro, NC

1989 - 1992
Pianist for Hominy Baptist Church, Candler, NC

1989 - 1992
Member and assistant accompanist for Asheville Youth Choral Society

From the time I was in middle school to the present, I have accompanied several choral groups from area middle and high schools; have accompanied several high school musical theatre productions (Oklahoma, Once Upon A Mattress, Grease, and Little Shop of Horrors); have accompanied several vocal students and church choirs (substitute basis); have accompanied choral clinics for Buncombe Baptist Association and Hominy Baptist Church (clinics led by Christian choral music composers, Anna Laura Page and Mary McDonald); have provided music for numerous weddings, family parties, anniversaries, funerals, and church functions; took part in forming and leading a worship team ("Chasing Canaan") who led worship for "OneEighty", the Woodland Hills Baptist Youth Worship Service. Currently, I am working with two high school seniors on their Senior Voice Recitals and am accompanying the Enka High School Choral Department for all performances, festivals, and competitions.

Because of my strengths in accompanying and leading in worship, I integrate these skills into the instruction I offer to my students. My goal is to help students develop to their potential in sight-reading, expression, creativity, improvisation, and accompanying skills. With intermediate and advanced students, I encourage traditional skills as well as the freedom to add their own style to the music they enjoy.

I offer competitive, reasonable rates, and use a variety of instructional books and teacher-created activities to teach and reinforce important musical concepts and skills.

I have a student-centered, comfortable, and fun approach to teaching theory, technique, skills, and musicianship. Students are guided to use their musical abilities to the glory of God, and to be good stewards of the skills and talents given by Him.

I offer lessons to any age, any skill level. I do expect students to spend an adequate amount of time in daily practice, while offering them some freedom in choosing what they wish to play. (I do expect a moderate amount of classical, sacred, modern, jazz, and pop music).

Performance opportunities include:
*Winter/Christmas Recital and Luncheon
*Spring Recital and Picnic (outdoor recital and "bring your own blanket"
picnic on the grounds of Merrimon Christian School)
*Accompanying school choral groups, musical productions, and worship events.
*Providing service and worship music at the students' own churches.
