About the Teacher

Pianist Ko-Chia Shen, winner of the 1992 and 1995 College of Notre Dame (Notre Dame de Namur University) Concerto Competition, is a native of Taiwan. Shen began her piano studies at age 7, and at 13 was accepted into the prestigious Kuang-Zen School of Music in Taipei. During her studies there, she took third place overall in the Nation Chinese Instrumental Competition and the first place in piano. While a student at Shin-Chien College in Taipei, Ko-Chia was awarded first place in chamber music and upon graduation received first prize for piano. She also received a performance scholarship from the Yamaha Music Company. In February 1994, 1995 and 1996 she was feature in the Young Artist Series at College of Notre Dame. As a recipient of the Brooks Music Scholarship form 1992 to 1996, Ko-Chia finished her Bachelor of music degree at College of Notre Dame 1994 and completed her MM degree on May 1996 (GPA: 4.0). She is a piano student of Thomas LaRatta, artist-in-residence. In December 1995 she worked on ¡§Romantic Innovation in Franz Liszt Sonata in b minor¡¨ for her lecture recital and in February 1996 her solo recital was devote to the music of Franz Liszt. In May 1996 she got Music Merit Award from Peninsula Symphony, San Carlos Guild. She was a member of Chinese Music Teachers Association and the College Music Society. Shen is the member of British Columbia Registered Music Teachers.
