MUSIC BACKGROUND
Born in Los Angeles, California, Kathleen Flemming
began her formal piano study at age seven, and in a
short time was notating by ear the music she heard
on the radio and TV. Her first teacher's continued
training with lead sheets and chords further
nurtured her ability to play by ear and transpose at
sight.
Pursuing study in classical piano, Ms. Flemming's
teachers include Salome Arkatov (LA) and Joanna
Graudan, who actually entertained Rachmaninoff in
her home! From both of these teachers Ms. Flemming
grew in her passion for piano study and performance,
gaining added insight into a deeper, richer tone at
the piano with a more expressive melodic
personality.
STUDENT ACHIEVEMENTS
Since 1972, Ms. Flemming's students have
participated annually in the Certificate of Merit
program sponsored by the California Music Teachers'
Association. Many of her students have been accepted
to perform in the CM honors recitals and at MTAC's
annual Convention. At least 30 of her students have
enrolled in college as piano majors. Currently one
of her past students is a professional accompanist
for the San Francisco opera rehearsals. Another
student holds the position of music and drama
director at the SF Music Conservatory, and a third
student recently returned from his second trip to
Prague where he was especially selected for solo and
master class appearances.
In our local Delta branch music competition, four of
Ms. Flemming's students earned 1st place awards in
the past eight years.
