Kelly Powers
pianist, composer and educator is a young,
inspired artist making her way on the New
York City jazz scene. Kelly
graduated Magna Cum Laude from Jackie McLean
Institute for Jazz Studies and thereupon
pursued her Master degree at the Manhattan
School of Music. During this time she was a
student of pianists Harold Mabern, Larry
Willis, Garry Dial, Andy Laverne and jazz
legend Jackie McLean. Kelly
also had the opportunity to study with
George Cables at the Jazz in July summer
program at University of Massachusetts,
Amherst.
Kelly has performed
alongside many great jazz artists including
Jimmy Heath, Eddie Henderson, Nat Reeves,
Steve Davis, Jim Rotundi, Eric Alexander,
Jeremy Pelt, Winard Harper, Dezron Douglas
and Luquez Curtis. She has also performed
and toured with many big bands including the
Artie Shaw Orchestra, Cab Calloway
Orchestra, Jack Jeffers NYC Classics, George
Gee Swing Orchestra and Travis Sullivan
Bjorkestra. She has played many venues
around the world, some of these include,
Jazz Caf (London), Body and Soul (Tokyo),
Caf Rosenberg (Reykjavik), Jazz Club
(Barcelona), Smoke, Cleopatra's Needle,
Kitano, Zinc Bar, Miles Caf, Swing 46,
Minton's Playhouse, the Carlyle, Rainbow
Room, Scullers and Regattabar.
Ms. Powers graduated
from the Manhattan School of Music jazz
program in 2006, where she studied with
Garry Dial, Cecil Bridgewater and Dave
Leibman. Upon graduation, her debut CD
(available on iTunes and CDBaby) was
released including sidemen Matt Aronoff,
Kendrick Scott and special guest Samir Zarif.
This CD features two original compositions
and arrangements of classic jazz standards.
Ms. Powers has taught
jazz improvisation and piano at summer camps
at the Artist Collective (Hartford, CT) and
Montclair Music Camp (Montclair, NJ). She
currently has a sizeable roster of private
students and has appeared in educational
concerts for children at the Jazz at Lincoln
Center Webop Program. She is on faculty at
the Brooklyn Conservatory of Music and the
Bergen Academy of Music and Arts (Oradell,
NJ).
