Joyce Grantham, NCTM

Joyce Grantham graduated with the AB Degree in Music Composition from Mills College, where she was a Hellman Scholar and studied with Bernhard Abramowitsch, Darius Milhaud, Leon Kirchner, Morton Subotnick, Nathan Rubin and Margaret Lyon. She taught piano in the Preparatory School at Mills, and received coaching in piano pedagogy from the Director James Beail. While at Mills, she won the Piano Prize, the Mozart Concerto Competition, and the Composition Prize. After graduation, she continued her education by attending workshops and seminars by leading artists and clinicians. Joyce began her piano studies with her mother at 3 ½ and had her first lesson with Shirley Lewis Adams of Berkeley at age 4. At age 11 she was accepted as a pupil of Dr. Robert Vetlesen, with whom she studied until entering Mills. Dr. Vetlesen was a distinguished concert pianist and the Director of the San Francisco Academy of Music, who had studied with Artur Schnabel, Emil von Sauer, Bela Bartok and Josef and Rosina Lhevinne.

Joyce made her first public performance at the age of 5, and went on to a successful concert career that included Debut recitals in Honolulu, San Francisco, and New York, appearances as soloist with the San Francisco and Oakland Symphonies, numerous performances around the San Francisco Bay Area and Carmel, and performances on public radio and television. She also performed in Europe, and collaborated with other instrumentalists and singers. She has been teaching since the age of 15, and she holds the Permanent National Professional Certification from MTNA. She is a member of MTAC, MTNA/CAPMT, and National Guild of Piano Teachers. Some of her students have gone on to concert and teaching careers, others to careers in other music-related fields. She teaches all ages and levels, and offers training in technique and interpretation, music theory, listening skills, sight reading, music history and beginning composition. Lessons are tailored to the individual student, and students have opportunities to perform in recitals, student evaluations and competitions. Weekly lessons are 30, 45 or 60 minutes, and special arrangements can be made for longer or more frequent lessons. Call or email to arrange an interview.
