Pianist
and teacher, Judy Torigoe, began her piano studies
at the age of 10. She has studied with such
well-respected pedagogues as Rudolph Ganz and Robert
McDowell while a student at Roosevelt University in
Chicago, and C. Allen Anderson and Harold Berlinger
while a student at Northeastern Illinois State
University. She was a Music Talent Scholarship
recipient at Northeastern and graduated Magna Cum
Laude in 1994 with a Bachelor of Arts Degree in
Piano Performance.
Ms. Torigoe has been teaching successfully for over
15 years and is the owner of Allegro Music Studio in
Sedona, Arizona. Although many styles of music are
taught, such as jazz, rags, blues, pop and musical
theatre, classical music is the primary teaching
area. Musicianship is an important aspect of Ms.
Torigoe's teaching style. She encourages her
students to respect the composer's wishes by playing
the music as the composer wrote it and, further, to
play it with artistry and musicianship.
Students range in age from 7 to 70+. Many of Ms.
Torigoe's students have received high honors for
their performances in various adjudicated events.
Other performance opportunities include recitals,
neighborhood events and music festivals.
Professional associations include the Music Teachers
National Association (MTNA), Arizona State Music
Teachers Association (ASMTA) and the Northern
Arizona Music Teachers Association (NAMTA). Prior to
her move to Arizona in 2007, Ms. Torigoe was a
member of the Illinois State Music Teachers
Association (ISMTA) and a member and officer of the
Chicago Area Music Teachers Association (CAMTA).
Judy Torigoe and her studio were featured in the
Fall 2003 issue of the Chicago Learning Guide, a
directory of personal, professional and recreational
learning opportunities in the Chicago area.
