Composer, Performer, and Teacher,
Frank Horvat was born in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada. Since
beginning his studies at the age of five, he has ventured into
many areas of music and has received many awards and
scholarships along the way. His childhood years included intense
musical study under a variety of teachers in Ottawa including
Virginia Strawn & Sandra Cooke. He holds an ARCT Diploma with
Honours in Piano Teaching from the Royal Conservatory of Music.
He also holds a Bachelor of Music Degree majoring in Composition
at the Faculty of Music, University of Toronto where he studied
Composition with Walter Buczynski and Christos Hatzis and Piano
with Boyanna Toyich.
Frank has been an active piano & theory teacher for many years
in both Ottawa and Toronto. He has also worked closely with
music teaching colleagues in the Ontario Registered Music
Teachers’ Association where he has been an active member and
President of the Central Toronto Branch.
He has also performed, directed, and arranged many styles of
music including Classical, Blues, Rock, Jazz and Pop in both
solo and ensemble/band efforts in Canada and abroad.
Frank began writing music at the age of eleven. Again he has
explored many genres and styles of music in his compositions.
His portfolio consists of chamber, pop, electronic, musical
theatre, film, and large ensemble works. His work has been
performed on many occasions in a variety of live venues and on
television networks like the CBC & Bravo.
Presently, Frank maintains a private teaching studio along with
being a member of the College of Theory Examiners for the Royal
Conservatory of Music. Additionally, he conducts workshops and
authors articles on a variety of topics related to music
education. Along with making concert appearances as a performer,
he also continues work on a variety of compositions from his
home studio including the completion of scores and soundtracks
for both live concert and film genres. Frank’s future plans
include further expanding the use of music as a means to
stimulate the mind and soul through composition, performance and
education.
