Indonesian born pianist David Sutanto gained his international
recognition when he won the "1997 Artists International
Audition" in New York, which resulted in his critically
acclaimed New York recital debut at the Carnegie Recital Hall in
1998. He was also winner of the "1996 Chopin Foundation Piano
Competition" in New York; the Brahms, Schumann, and Mozart Piano
Honors Competitions in Boston; and top-prize winner of the
"National Yamaha Piano Competition" in Indonesia. While studying
at The Boston Conservatory, he received the "Arthur B. Whitney
Award" for the highest scholastic achievement and the "Alfred E.
Lee Memorial Scholarship Award" for his excellence in piano
playing. Mr. Sutanto is an active performer as both piano
soloist and chamber musician. His performances throughout the
United States include the Aspen Music Festival, the
International Foundation for Art and Musical Excellence (FAME)
Festival in New Jersey, the Bowdoin Music Festival in Maine, the
Grandin Music Festival and Music 2000 Festival in Cincinnati,
the Federal Reserves Bank of Boston, etc. He has performed
overseas in Indonesia and Taiwan. In the summer of 2001, he was
invited as staff pianist for Dorothy DeLay's violin studio in
the Aspen Music Festival.
David was featured in the radio interview "Asian American Hour,"
WAIF-FM in Cincinnati. Orchestral appearances include
performances with The Boston Conservatory Orchestra and CCM
Philharmonia Orchestra.
As an accompanist, he played in public master classes by Yo-Yo
Ma, Julius Baker, and Erick Friedman among others, and was also
pianist for the Starling Preparatory String Project in
Cincinnati under Kurt Sassmannshaus. In the summer of 2000,
David was pianist for the Cincinnati Flute Symposium and the
International Women's Brass Conference in Cincinnati. Mr.
Sutanto made three recordings with Tape Complex Inc., TDK, and
McGraw-Hill Company.
He received his BM from The Boston Conservatory (Summa cum
laude), MM from Manhattan School of Music, and is currently an
ABD from College-Conservatory of Music, University of
Cincinnati. He studied with Frank Weinstock, Dr. Donn-Alexandre
Feder, Jung-Ja Kim, Martin Canin, Gabriel Chodos, and Karminia
Bungsu. Mr. Sutanto joined the music department of Del Mar
College as piano instructor in 2002.
