Wood has been teaching music for over 28
years in Southern California. With education
from the Conservatory of Music at the
University of the Pacific, University of
California Los Angeles and at the University
of California Irvine, Cynthia has worked
closely with some of the foremost educators
and musicians in Los Angeles and Orange
Counties.
Her teaching style is one that
blends current piano methods with music
theory, composition, ear training and
musicianship. She specializes in teaching
piano to beginners and young composers ages
4-10 years old. Cynthia teaches private
flute lessons to all ages and levels, from
beginners to professional.
Cynthia, a professional Flutist in both
Classical and Jazz styles, free-lances for
symphony orchestras, chamber and jazz
ensembles in Orange County, CA.
Piano Lessons:
Weekly, 30 minute piano lessons are
individualized to the child's needs and
abilities. Composition training can be
included as part of the student's lesson, or
can be scheduled as a separate lesson.
Materials used during the lessons include
technique and theory method books,
flashcards, and an assignment book for
keeping practice minutes. Young beginner
students are asked to practice between 50
and 100 minutes a week for preparatory
beginner levels. Beginner levels are asked
to practice 100-200 minutes per week.
Theory Lesson:
Weekly, 60 minute theory lessons are
tailored to the student's needs. These
lessons are highly recommended for students
in the Certificate of Merit program. Any age
or level accepted.

Flute Lessons:
Weekly or bi-monthly 45 minutes or 60
minute lessons are offered to all ages and
levels. Complete method in Classical and
Jazz performance, repertoire, technique and
music theory offered.
Specializing in teaching college and
university level flute majors and to high
school players needing preparation for
auditions and competitions.
Certificate of Merit preparation offered.

She has
studied
flute
with
world
re-known
flutist
and
composer
James
Newton
and
assisted
Mr.
Newton
in
compiling
his book
of
exercises
for the
flute.
She also
studied
classical
and
ensemble
work
with
flutist
Larry
Kaplan
of the
Los
Angeles
Philharmonic,
and has
taken
master
classes
with
Louis
Moyse.
As a
performance
major
student
at UCLA
she
studied
with Los
Angeles
studio
musician/flutist
Sheridan
Stokes
who also
received
a
lifetime
achievement
award
from the
National
Flute
Association
and of
which
Cynthia
was also
a
member.
Cynthia
has
taught
piano
through
the
Capistrano
Unified
School
District
Music
Director
at Oak
Grove
Elementary
School
in Aliso
Viejo
instructing
360
second
and
third
graders
piano
and
music
fundamentals
in a
program
designed
by UCI
called
M.I.N.D.
music.
Cynthia
brought
composition
to the
program,
which
culminated
in
having
90 of
the
students
performed
their
own
works at
the end
of the
year
music
program
for the
parents.
Today,
Cynthia
leads an
ensemble
called
Trio
Sonate
that
performs
for
various
occasions
and
settings.
