Manoa Piano School was founded in 1988 by Carolyn Espina Stanton. Mrs. Stanton received her Master’s degree in Piano Pedagogy & Performance from the University of Texas at Austin in 1980. She studied there with the renowned Dr. Amanda Vick Lethco, co-author of the popular "Alfred" series of piano books. She received her Bachelor’s degree in Piano Performance from the University of Hawaii-Manoa and studied with former Juilliard professor Nicholas
Zumbro.
Her approach is one of a positive, step-by-step process to learning with a series of successes at each person’s individual pace. Mrs. Stanton has over 27 years’ experience in teaching both private lessons and groups ranging from 2 to 24 students. Her teaching, although geared primarily towards excellence in classical piano performance, offers a comprehensive approach to music in general through an understanding of chords and theory, sightreading, and playing music with
others.
Mrs. Stanton also teaches at Punahou Music School, where she has been a member of the faculty for seven years. She has taught internationally in places as diverse as California, Indonesia, Texas, Boston, and Honolulu. She is experienced with teaching students of all ages, from pre-school through senior citizens. Her other teaching credentials include Yamaha Music School, Ellen Masaki School of Music, Kapiolani Community College, the University of Texas at Austin, and the University of Hawaii at
Manoa.
She is a past President of the Honolulu Piano Teachers Association, an active member of the Hawaii Music Teachers Association, and formerly with the New England Music Teachers Association, California Music Teachers Association, and the National Guild of Piano Teachers.
Mrs. Stanton resides in Manoa with her husband, Tim, and three children, aged 9, 11, and 13.
