Ben Hanson received his high
school diploma from Hanson Home School, Duluth and his associate
of arts degree from Lake Superior College, Duluth.
Ben first studied under Beth Kaiser with the Suzuki method, and
then with Vicki Ott for 13 years. Along with piano, he has
studied voice under David Roby and Dr. David Playfair. He has
completed 2 years of the music education program at University
of Wisconsin, Superior with courses in music theory and history,
ear training, and lessons. He has received his associate in arts
degree from Lake Superior College in December 2006.
Ben is a musician in the Duluth/Superior area, as a pianist,
vocalist and teacher. His teaching career began in 1999, and has
continued to presently with over 100 students under his name. He
has taught privately, along with teaching at Lincoln Park
Elementary School, Hamlin Music Academy, and now at Schmitt
Music.
Ben has been a church musician since 1998. He was the pianist at
Lincoln Park Baptist Church for 5 years, where he was a part of
their music committee and worship team. He also plays at
churches in the Duluth/Superior area, including Holy Family
Catholic Church, the Lutheran Church of the Holy Trinity, and
his home church, Mount of Olives Baptist Church.
Ben has also provided music for weddings, funerals, and
recitals. He has accompanied choirs, vocalists, and
instrumentalists. He has sung with the Duluth Superior Symphony
Orchestra Chorus (DSSOC) and University of Wisconsin, Superior's
A cappella and Chamber choirs. He has sung under the direction
of Dr. Matthew Faerber, Dr. Stanley Wold, Marcia VanCamp, Jerry
Upton, Michael Goodlet, Vicki Ott, and internationally renowned
conductors Robert Ray and Markand Thaker. He has played under
the direction of Mark Overland, Tina Thielen-Gaffey, Marcia
VanCamp, Vicki Ott, Carolyn Rynex, Calland Metts, and Juan Tony
Guzman, just to name a few.
Ben's accomplishments include receiving 6 consecutive Superior
ratings in the Duluth Music Teachers Association's (DMTA)
sponsored Junior Festival, where he also volunteered as an
auditor for 3 years. He was the music director for the Youth
Celebration of Missions production at Mount of Olives Baptist
Church for 4 years.
His musical skills have been showcased at such places as
University of Wisconsin, Superior, University of Minnesota,
Duluth, College of Saint Scholastica, Denfeld High School,
Morgan Park Middle School, Marshall School, Lake Superior
College, the Duluth Playhouse, the DECC, Mount of Olives Baptist
Church, Eastridge Community Church, Concordia Lutheran Church,
Holy Family Catholic Church, Lincoln Park Community Church, and
First Lutheran Church, just to name a few.
Ben is currently the primary piano teacher at Schmitt Music in
the Miller Hill Mall. He is on staff at Denfeld High School as
the accompanist for their choirs. He is the accompanist for the
Encore group of the Lake Superior Youth Chorus, and also for
Lake Superior College's Chamber Choir. He is the pianist for The
Lutheran Church of the Holy Trinity of Duluth.
