Studio Name: The Bailey Studio
Teacher's Name: Andrea Bailey, NCTM
The Bailey Studio is dedicated to giving pianists of all ages a
positive and rewarding experience with music. Helping students
understand that music can be fun, rewarding, and exciting is a
top priority.
Students of the Bailey Studio will be challenged because a
student cannot recognize their progress until a legitimate
challenge has been surmounted. Students are provided with many
opportunities to make progress. |

|
In addition to private lessons there will usually be a Master
Class and a Group Lesson each semester. Students are encouraged
to participate in Competitions, and to attend live performances.
I am positive that every student can have a wonderful, life
enhancing experience in the study of music. |

Tuition Assumptions
Your tuition reserves you a weekly time slot and membership
within the studio. There will be no make-up lessons for
cancellations made by students. If the student knows there will
be a conflict, he or she should try to change lesson times with
another student and notify the teacher of the change.
Lessons will not be canceled due to weather; even if public
schools are closed. Students who decide they are not coming due
to weather are requested to call and let the teacher know.
Each semester students will have a minimum of twelve scheduled
events including: lessons, group and master classes, and
recitals. Upcoming events will be listed on the online calendar.
Teacher cancellations other than the predetermined holidays will
be made up. They may be made up by giving extra time at other
lessons during the semester or by scheduling another lesson.
Please make note of the previously mentioned holidays so you can
plan around the lessons that are already scheduled to be missed.
Students should expect semester tuition rates to be raised
approximately $10 annually.
Other Information
THE LEARNING CLIMATE:
Provide the best piano possible and have it tuned regularly;
once a year is the absolute minimum. Students of the Bailey
Studio are strongly encouraged to have an accoustic piano for
their primary instrument rather than an electronic/digital piano
or a keyboard. The key weight and sound production of an
accoustic piano are necessary if the goal is to play with
expression rather than just learning to read notes and rhythms.
Several local music stores offer piano rentals if needed.
The practice room should be pleasant, at a comfortable
temperature, with good lighting and free from distractions such
as the television or phone. Good practice takes concentration!
Create a household attitude that time at the piano is free from
interuptions. Love music, listen to the best available and
attend live performances.
STUDIO RECITALS:
In order to develop self confidence and poise at the piano,
students are expected to perform at recitals. They must come on
time and remain for the entire recital to participate.
Participation for adult students is optional.
I am happy to help students prepare for special performances.
Please play often for friends, family, church, and school
events.
PERFORMANCE CLASSES and GROUP LESSONS:
At performance class students play for each other, and comment
on each others playing. These classes are a great source of
motivation and peer reinforcement. They also provide a wonderful
opportunity to hear live music. Group lessons provide a chance
to work on many areas of music education that we may not have
time for in the private lesson including; music history, theory,
ensemble playing, sight reading, ear training, rhythmic drills
and composition. Students are assigned to a group by age not
ability level. Unfortunately, there is no way to make up missed
group lessons or master classes.
PARENT INVOLVEMENT:
Young students can not be succesful practicing or coming to
lessons alone, and students must gradually learn to attend
lessons by themselves, or they are not progressing to their
capacity. The best teaching is done when the child is learning
gradually to do things on his/her own. Both teacher and parents
must encourage this in the students and allow them to develop
fully. If the student can't be independent of the parent by age
10 he/she usually gets worse not better. By this age a parents
presence can hamper rather than enhance the childs development.
If students are to become self-motivated they must be allowed
the space to grow independently.
GUIDELINES FOR PARENTS ATTENDING LESSONS & PRACTICING WITH
CHILDREN:
5 & 6-year-olds, Parents required to attend every lesson and
practice daily with their child.
7-year-olds, A parent attends three out of every four private
lessons. The child attends every 4th lesson alone. All
practicing on that week is done alone with the parent checking
each item daily when the child thinks it is done.
8-year-olds, A parent attends every other private lesson alone
and practices with the child on those weeks.
9-year-olds, A parent attends one out of every four private
lessons.
10-year-olds, The student should be able to attend all lessons
and master classes alone.
After the 5th-grade the way a parent can help is by:
1. Giving encouraging words.
2. Making practice times available, and not allowing
disturbances during these times.
3. Seeing that all practicing is done.
4. Working out a reward system for tasks accomplished.
5. Making available a fine and in tune instrument to practice
on.
6. Sitting in on the practice sessions for short periods simply
to compliment not to criticize or help.
7. Getting the child to and from lessons on time.
STAR SYSTEM & DISCONTINUANCE OF LESSONS:
Students are expected to come to each lesson prepared. If a
student comes to a lesson with an assignment not prepared, the
student will receive a "star" or in other words, a mark (*)
indicating that he or she was not prepared. If the student comes
to the following lesson with the "star item" not prepared, the
student will then receive two stars etc. . . If a child receives
three stars the parent will be contacted because a habitual
problem that prevents satisfactory progress has developed. The
student with four stars will be placed on probation. Each time
probation is used, specific goals for improvement are set. If
these goals are not met in the specified time, or the necessary
change is not sustained over time, the student will be dropped.
This is necessary because The Bailey Studio maintains a list of
perspective students waiting for a time slot to become
available. Students must make satisfactory progress to maintain
their spot in the studio.
Please turn off cell phones while in the studio, or set them to
ring silently and take them outside to talk. Siblings who are
not part of the lesson but who need to come when the parent is
present must be able to sit quietly and play, read or study.
Students must practice daily with their notebooks open and
placed directly in front of them on the piano.
I do not work on Sundays. If you need to talk to me please call
M-F between 9am and 6pm. |
