INSTRUCTION:
The McLelland Piano Studio offers quality music instruction in
piano and organ for students of all ages and levels of
advancement. Through a unique combination of private lessons,
computer music lab, small-group musicianship classes, and
numerous special events, students will receive specialized
training in such areas as: piano (or organ) performance, sight
reading, keyboard theory and technic, harmonization,
ear-training, transposition, improvisation, written theory and
notation, composition, music history, ensemble and concerto
work, and much more. Individual
goals and objectives are developed for each student based upon
the student's age, ability, and interests.
PRIVATE LESSON:
The private lesson format allows the teacher to concentrate on
specific musical and personal needs, providing opportunities for
individualized advancement. A wide selection of repertoire is
carefully selected to match the needs and strengths of each
student -- from the music of such great composers as Bach,
Beethoven, Mozart, Chopin, and Brahms, to the music of our times
through jazz, pop, blues, and improvisation. Each student
receives a detailed assignment notebook, with practice
suggestions, weekly evaluations, ear-training/listening/history
assignments, and reminders of upcoming events.
MUSICIANSHIP CLASSES:
Students receive encouragement and develop strong performance
and listening skills through the regular, small-group classes.
Grouped according to age, level, and personality-type, students
are provided a stress-free environment to perform with and for
their peers and receive valuable reinforcement of concepts
introduced in the private lessons.
FACILITIES:
Students can enjoy their music-making in well-equipped studios
situated in two, convenient locations. The primary studio,
overlooking the beautiful Lake Paradise, features concert grand,
and upright pianos, electric keyboards, a computer music lab,
and audio/video lab, with an ever-growing reading/audio/video
reference library, including the world renowned Taubman videos,
texts, periodicals, and the complete New Groves Dictionary of
Music. In the computer/listening lab, students will find a
television for video viewing, stereo for cd/tape recordings, and
keyboard lab for extra sight-reading practice, and for the
interactive music educational computer software including
Encore, Music Ace, Alfreds, Practical Theory, Music Time, and
much more. The satellite location features Steinway grand
pianos, uprights, keyboards, pipe organ, and harpsichord,
periodicals, and the New Groves.
SPECIAL PROGRAMS:
Special masterclasses and workshops are presented throughout the
year providing exposure to all aspects of the instrument and
fostering a deeper appreciation of music. These events are
included in the tuition cost and many are free and open to the
public. Designed as a motivational and educational tool for
students and their families, these programs supplement other
events offered by The Metro Music Forum of Birmingham, the
Birmingham Music Teachers Association, Arts Council, MTNA, AMTA,
AGO, and others. Past events have included: Keyboard Carnivals,
Composer Festivals, Technic Workshops, Taubman Symposiums,
Baroque Festivals, Concerto Camps, Pipe Organ "Crawls" and
Demonstrations, Masterclasses, fundraising "Pianothon,"
Christmas Caroling at nursing homes, and much more.
TAUBMAN APPROACH:
Discover the internationally renowned Taubman piano technic
through your private lessons, the Taubman videos, Taubman
workshops presented locally and NYC. The Taubman approach
enables pianists to play effortlessly, unraveling the technical
complexities that block artistic expression. Concert pianists,
doctors, teachers, and other instrumentalists travel from around
the world to study the work of Dorothy Taubman. Because of Amy
McLelland's extensive and ongoing study with the leading Taubman
teacher, Edna Golandsky in New York City, qualifying and
interested students are afforded the opportunity to participate
in masterclasses with
Golandsky and other master Taubman teachers.
PRESCHOOL PIANO PROGRAM:
Using the popular method published by Alfred Music Co., Music
for Little Mozarts, PI McLelland Piano offers a very special
piano program designed to introduce students ages 4-6 to the
piano. The program develops musical aptitude through such
activities as singing, movement, games, writing, and
ear-training. Most importantly, our program is unique in that it
focuses on the actual piano playing, providing students early
exposure to healthy, "Taubman" principles of movement which,
once mastered, can prevent injury and technical limitations
later in life, whether applied toward future music study of any
instrument, or toward everyday tasks such as computer typing.
The 45-minute small group class (limit of 4 students per class)
meets weekly at both studio locations.
SUMMER MUSIC CAMP AND GUEST ARTIST SERIES:
The public is invited to join students, faculty, and guest
performers for special concerts throughout the year and during
our weeklong Summer Music Camp presented each August. Past guest
performers have included ASO concertmaster, Daniel Szasz and
pianist Alina Voicu, and pianist Dr. Anthony Pattin.
