About the Teacher
|
The
2004 Cole Porter fellow of the American Pianists Association,
Adam Birnbaum was born and raised in the Boston area. His early
music education took place at the New England Conservatory of
Music's Preparatory School, where he studied music theory,
chamber music, and classical and jazz performance.
Mr. Birnbaum graduated from the Honors Program at Boston College
in 2001. There he studied composition with Thomas Oboe Lee. His
senior thesis analyzed the development of the jazz piano solo
through the 20th century from Jelly Roll Morton to Herbie
Hancock. In May 2003 Adam received an Artist's Diploma from
Juilliard as a member of the inaugural class in the Juilliard
Institute for Jazz Studies.
An active performer in jazz and classical music, Mr. Birnbaum
has won numerous awards and honors. He has been a featured
soloist in the Rockport Chamber Music Festival, and was named
"Outstanding College Rhythm Section Performer" at the 2000 Reno
Jazz Festival. He was an invited participant in the 2001 JazzAspen Snowmass JAS Academy for Emerging Artists, and has
been a guest artist with the Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra at
Alice Tully Hall. In January 2003 Adam recorded a solo piano
album for Yamaha's "Rising Star" series for disklaviers. In May
2004, Adam won the American Pianists Association triennial
American Jazz Piano Competition, becoming the 2004 Cole Porter
fellow in jazz. He is also a composer. In October 2002, Jazziz
magazine featured his song "Dealing" in their monthly "Jazziz on
Disc." "Welcome to Gotham," a commissioned composition for big
band, was premiered by Jazz Band Classic at Carnegie Hall in
June 2003.
Mr. Birnbaum has studied classical piano primarily with John
Adams and Patricia Zander and jazz with Danilo Perez, Charlie
Banacos, Kenny Barron and Fred Hersch.
Adam versatile background gives him the ability to teach anyone
any style. He teaches traditional technique and classical
repertoire as well as jazz, pop, ear training, theory,
arranging, and improvisational techniques. Adam's lessons are
taught on a Steinway grand piano on the Upper West Side of
